Tanggu is located at 38°44'-39°13' N, 117°30'-117°46' E, adjacent to Bohai; Called as "portal of the capital city" and "fortress to the sea", it is 45 km from center of Tianjin, 160 km form Beijing. Its total area is 859 sq. km. with resident population of 560,000; Haihe River crosses over the whole area from west to east. Its topographic feature is the terrestrial fluvial plain with normal height above sea level of 1.3 to 3.8 m. It belongs to mainland to marine monsoon climate of medium latitudes with distinct monsoon and distinctive four seasons. Annual average temperature is 12°C and annual average rainfall is 602.9 mm.

Favorable geographical location.Tanggu, in line intersection of Beijing-Tianjin city belt and Bohai Rim city belt, is located at the core zone of Binhai New Area; it is the location of Tianjin Port, TEDA, Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone, Tanggu National Marine Hi-tech Development Area and port-related industry district. Among the eight functional areas of Binhai New Area, central commercial district, seaport logistics district, Binhai hi-tech industrial zone and port-related industry district are all located in Tanggu; part of the advanced manufacturing industry district, Binhai chemical industry district and seashore tourist district are in Tianjin. Marine-land-air network of communication lines in Tanggu is convenient; Tanggu is the nearest international trade port from Beijing and the largest logistics distributing center in north China; it is also one important starting point of Eurasia Land Bridge international transit. The Tianjin Port in Tanggu has done business with more than 300 ports in over 170 countries; there are more than 70 periodical liner services. Tanggu railways are closely connected with national main line railways: Beijing-Haerbin railway passes the district, through whole area of northeast. Near Beijing-Shanghai railway passes through North China and East China. Shan-Guang Expressway and Dandong-Lasa Expressway pass through the district and connect the northeast, North China and northwest; Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Expressway, Tianjin-Binhai Expressway and Tianjin-Tanggu, Jinnan-Tanggu, Tianjin-Dagang Highway connect Tanggu with surrounding cities together. It only takes 90 minutes driving from Tanggu to China's largest passenger transportation airport---Beijing Capital Airport, 30 minutes to China's largest cargo transportation airport---Tianjin Binhai International Airport. The second expressway from Beijing to Tanggu and the Beijing-Tianjin inter-city express railway will be put into operation before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Rich natural resources.There are rich natural resources of petroleum, natural gas, terrestrial heat, crude salt and marine products, etc. Boxi Oil Field is the first offshore oil and gas field in China, delivering natural gas of 450,000 cubic meters to land daily. There is one of the areas with most terrestrial heat storage capacity in China, equivalent to standard coal of more than 800 million tons, ranking the second in the world. There are coastlines of 92.16 km. with nearly a hundred kinds of marine products. The salinity of sea water is 3.5%, being suitable for making sea salt and extracting more than 90 kinds of chemical raw materials like kalium, lithium and bromine, etc. There are land for construction of 160 square kilometers and saline& alkaline mudflat of 130 square kilometers with broad space for development and advantages in competition.

Improved urban infrastructure functions.More than 10 urban cloverleaf junctions have been newly built; 85 trunk roads have been broadened and rebuilt to form the modernized transportation network that extends in all directions. The world top three single pylon cable stayed bridge--- Tanggu Haihe Bridge and China's largest urban interchange bridge---Binhai Over Bridge are not only with important geographical location but are also becoming one scene of the city. Improved supplies of water, electricity, natural gas, central heating and Info-communications are sufficient to satisfy the requirements of living and industrial production. 10 pieces of high-grade forestation squares are built in Tanggu inner city with the green coverage ratio of 35% for the whole district; public green land area per capita is 14 square meters; in 2005, the district was nominated as "National Hygienic City Demonstration Region".

Rapid development of trade and finance.Tanggu is the commercial center of Binhai New Area with commercial service facilities spreading all over the place, forming the market system with both internal and foreign trade. At present, there are 8 large-scale commercial facilities of more than 10,000 square meters with commercial area of business for more than 1 million square meters; modernized trade business pattern of great commerce, great circulation and great development has been established to form the modern logistic system with port characteristics. There are more than 10 financial& insurance institutes and 5 security exchange markets, so credit financing, securities, share dealing and insurance business could be handled conveniently to provide reliable guarantee for trade flow.

Rich and colorful tourism resources.Haihe Bund Park takes 130,000 square meters, being the largest entertainment plaza in Tianjin Binhai New Area. Binhai Century Plaza is magnificent and grand with total area of relief sculpture of 844.28 square meters which could be called as "top in China"; central fountain's water column spraying height could reach more than 100 m, creating the top height of China's current land fountain water column. Tianjin Coastal Resort of Tourism is now the largest man-made bathing beach in China and also one of the first batches of 4A grade scenic spots of China. There is the good name of "sea gate ancient fortress" for Dagu Fort, being the witness of modern history of China. Chaoyin Temple, established in second year Yongle of Ming Dynasty, is the unwonted temple that sitting west headed east in China with characteristic architectural style. Ziyun Park in inner city and Binhai Forest Park in north of Tanggu are all good places for tourists. "Launch out and be a fisherman for one day" activities in Beitang and Lvju River areas could let tourists enjoy the atmosphere of fisherman's family.

Abundant industry foundation.Tianjin is the birthplace of China's north modern industry. Tianjin Soda Plant established in Tanggu in 1917 was the earliest large soda manufacturing plant in modern Asia; now it has been developed as one of the largest domestic calcined soda manufacturing plants that being controlled by computers. Dagu Fine Chemical Co., Ltd., established in 1943, is the large-scale modernized chlor-alkali manufacturing enterprise in China. Baili Salt Field is the world famous producing area of "Changlu salt". Mainstay industries are developing rapidly, such as: oil and gas production, petrochemical industry& marine chemical industry, Ship building& repair and equipment manufacturing industry, etc. Many domestic and foreign large financial groups have come to Tanggu for investment and development, such as: U.S. Boeing Co., Holland Shell Lubricants, Italy Techint Group, Korean LG Chemistry, CNOOC Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. and China Oilfield Services Limited, etc.
